Educational Interpreter Performance Assessment®
Many states require a certificate of competency using the EIPA in order to work as an educational interpreter. For example, in Colorado and Louisiana an interpreter must have an EIPA score of at least 3.5 in order to provide interpreting services in the school setting. Many states have additional requirements such as university credit, continuing education units, and criminal background checks.
Some states are using the EIPA as a precursor to establish a certification system and to design professional plans for their interpreters. Such plans help interpreters determine the professional development (training, workshops, classes) needed to further educational interpreter abilities.
