EIPA Screener

What is the EIPA Screener?

The EIPA Screener is a skills-based screening tool that provices a brief snapshot of a candidate’s expressive and receptive educational interpreting skills at the time of review. While the Screener evaluates the same general skill domains as the Educational Interpreter Performance Assessment, it uses a different scoring framework. Screener results are reported using categorical performance descriptors Proficient, Developing, and Not Yet Proficient rather than the scoring model used in the full Educational Interpreter Performance Assessment.

Results from the Screener do not predict performance on the Educational Interpreter Performance Assessment. Score differences may occur due to variations in test length, content sampling, and depth of scoring. The Screener is not a formal assessment and does not replace the full Educational Interpreter Performance Assessment.

Who is the Screener for?

The EIPA Screener is designed as a supplemental screening resource for educational and interpreting agencies seeking an efficient way to gauge a candidate’s educational interpreting skills. It is not intended for use by individual interpreters.
The Screener is not a replacement for the full Educational Interpreter Perforormance Assessment and should not be used as a stand-alone or determinative measure. Agencies are encouraged to consider multiple sources of information—such as interviews, references, and direct observation.

How does the Screener work?

Agencies interested in administering the Screener should contact the EIPA Diagnostic Center. The EIPA Diagnostic Center will provide detailed instructions for administering the Screener.

The agency is responsible for:

  • Arranging and administering the Screener
  • Providing recording equipment to capture the candidate’s performance

After the candidate completes the Screener:

  • The agency submits the recordings to the EIPA Diagnostic Center
  • The EIPA Diagnostic Center reviews submitted performances
  • An official Screener report is returned to the agency
